Rezos (Six Degrees)

Rezos (Six Degrees) ‘Rezos’ or prayers is the title of Bobi Céspedes’ first solo album. A highly individual opus, with all tracks written by the singer herself and arranged by Oriente López (former Afro Cuba band leader and one of Cuba’s best arrangers) and American film and music producer Greg Landau. Living in NY and the San Franciscan Bay Area since 1959, Bobi Céspedes’ music reflects her personal experience. A recognised ‘akpon’, the singer who leads the chants/prayers to the Orishas, she has one foot firmly planted in her ancestral heritage and Afro-Cuban culture while the other roams in exploration of the Afro-American rhythms of her country of adoption. The result is this long-awaited solo album in which the R&B beats of Rahsaan Fredericks’ bass rub shoulders with the inimitable Cuban ‘clave’ of Nenge Hernandez’s percussion and Oriente López’s piano. A unique ‘funkloric’ fusion recorded by Bobi’s son in just a week before being taken over the Atlantic to Wales for mixing by the Brits Gary Hughes and Donal Hodgson, ‘Rezos’ is the voice of Afro-Cuban women living in the United States today.
